Salzburg
I really enjoyed exploring Salzburg. I really enjoyed seeing all the Mozart, Doppler and 'Sound of Music' stuff. I DID NOT enjoy getting lost on "The Original Sound of Music Tour".
Salzburg was a really refreshing change. It's a mountain town at the foot of the Alps so the weather was cool (yet rainy), it was green and everything was really charming. They had those Bavarian style houses and lots of churches and old buildings and a real FORTRESS on top of a hill. Very very cool. But first I was all stressed about finding a plce to stay. I had tried to book a hostel but all the ones I found were either full or not answering the phone, so I just turned up in Salzburg, asked for hostels at the information counter and I was given some numbers, so I called one and arranged a bed for the night. Savvy.

Highlights

- the almost-hotel-like rooms in the Jugendherberge Haunspergasse. The rooms were really clean, there were only 4 beds per room and each room had its own toilet and shower rooms. How cool is that?

- How do you solve a problem like Maria? The Original Sound of Music Tour was also most excellent, even if I had a little misadventure in Mondsee. Walking around the city and discovering places where the movie was filmed was tres fun.

- Mozart EVERYTHING. I am not kidding about this.

- The cool Franciscan Capuchin monastery and the Nonnberg Benedictine abbey, and the St. Peter's monastery. They're all uphill so be prepared for climbing. The monasteries are also famous for their BEER.
